Fire Power

Doug Asks:

I'm thinking about buying a suitable shotgun instead of lugging around the old Berretta Goose Cannon I usually use. Any recommendations?

Indeed, it is difficult to swing a goose harvester on a Thunder Chicken doing Mach II through the aspens, a situation that often results in a "behind shot" as illustrated below.

Buck Shot recommends:

Something short (26" barrel).
20 ga. is enough fire power and you should be able to get "bullets" at any K-Mart.
Shoulder it few times to see if you like the balance.
Then after that, start shucking out $$$ until it is as light as you like it.

Do not over look the obvious! Since you probably won't actually shoot all that many birds with this gun over it's lifetime, you should make sure you buy a gun that is uniquely beautiful. A piece of art and fine craftsmanship. That way you'll have something to boast about around camp. You'll also have a fine family hierloom to leave your son (not some big old heavy goose bazooka that cost a dollar per round to feed)!

Yeah, well if I consider how many birds I'm likely to shoot with a new gun, I'd probably better off just buying extra beer. I rarely hit a bird, but never miss a beer.

Doug,

I have some guns you can test drive if you would like to put off buying a new one.

Sold! Thanks Jon, What loads will be needed? I've got plenty of 12 gauge, but not much if any 20s. I'll bring that extra beer! and some creative substitute in case of negative BSI.

Doug,
I have a semi-auto 12 an O/U 12 and a O/U combo 12 or 20 ga. I will also bring along some clay pigeons so that you will have ample opportunity to shoot. Bring as many shells as like.
